Digital Detox – A Guide to a Healthier YOU!

2020 has been a year of many things, and it feels like it’s also become the virtual age. Now more than ever we are all online and behind our screens. We are working from home, on zoom calls and on social media non stop! Screen fatigue is a real thing and it’s no joke. A digital detox is one way to help you get your life back on track and live more balanced with your online and offline (real life) world again – creating a healthier you!

The digital pivot

I myself have been majorly affected by all the COVID 19 regulations and lock downs. I went from hosting many monthly live events, workshops and classes to not being able to do any of it.

Pivoting my business and my offerings to this new online space has been a challenge for me. I’ve had to go outside of my comfort zone, learn new skills and wear even more hats than I did before! On top of it all, my time behind the screen has more than tripled!

Our human interactions have been limited, social gatherings cancelled, and we’ve all been funnelled to this online space, living our lives mostly behind a screen.

Many of us have had to adapt and make the move online. But finding balance with this new reality is also really, REALLY important.

Gratitude for what is

I am grateful we can still connect, even virtually, during these times. But it doesn’t replace the necessity and power of human interaction and connection. SO while I am thankful for the opportunity and ability to create and connect online, I also know the time spent in REAL life is KEY to my mental health.

Remembering gratitude for what is and what I have is one way I stay grounded and balanced too!

A Healthier You

I want to share some quick tips and tools you can add to your life to give you a digital detox and create a healthier YOU. This will help you create more balance and give you more time off the screen. We ALL need this!

As you apply these digital detox tools to your life, notice how your sleep will improve, your stress levels will decrease and your overall mental health will elevate.

5 Tips for a Digital Detox:

  • No Tech Before Bed
Stay off your tech about 30 mins before your bedtime. Instead, wind down by reading a book, focusing on your breath, talking with your lover in bed or journaling

  • Tech Free Mornings
Most of us jump onto our phones right as we get out of bed. Try staying off your phone until you’ve woken up, done your morning routine and are done getting ready for your day. I try to stay off my phone and social media until 9/10 AM (unless I have a scheduled phone call)

  • Tech Free Sundays
Take 1 day off your tech per week. Sundays are a great day for this – Tech Free Sundays! Throw your phone on airplane mode, set your emails to vacation mode and don’t open them until Monday ! Take your Sunday off to refuel and connect to yourself or your loved ones at home.

  • Time Limits
Your smartphone is SMART, so it can show you how much time you’re spending on each app daily. If you have an Iphone or android you can actually set time limits for your app usage. Put daily time limits on your most used social media apps. For example: set a 1hr daily limit for Instagram, a 1 hr limit for Facebook and Whatsapp etc.

  • 1 Week Detox from Social Media
This one is bold !! Take a whole week off your social media accounts. Commit to it!! Stay off of everything – IG, Facebook, Messenger, Twitter, LinkedIN, everything!!! Do that and see how you feel. (Let me know how it goes if you go for it!)
