The Benefits of Daily Yoga

Yoga entered my life when I was 14 years old. My mom was practicing Iyengar yoga and brought me along to some classes. Needless to say, as a young teen, I didn’t love that style of yoga. But I’m so grateful that I was exposed to tools like yoga and reiki at a young age, that later became my everyday life, literally! The benefits of daily yoga saved my life.

However and whenever yoga finds you, it’s always in perfect timing. This practice is sacred. Yoga literally means UNION. I interpret that union as the connection of body, mind, heart, soul and spirit.Yoga prepares the body to enter a state of relaxation and meditation.

It’s no surprise to me that the benefits of yoga, beyond that of spiritual nature, are also physical, mental and emotional too. And the good thing is, all you really need to do is 15 mins of daily yoga to get those benefits.

So what are some of the benefits of doing yoga daily you ask?

Well when you first start yoga, it might feel tough if your body is tight or you think you’re too old or not flexible enough etc. The truth is, yoga is for EVERY BODY.

The initial benefits when you start a practice can be relaxation and a sense of overall peace. As you continue your practice, it becomes a skill and a tool of resilience to move through life’s stress.

Some tangible benefits of daily yoga include:

Stress reduction

Each practice you do should include asanas (poses), pranayama (breathing) and shavasana (meditation).

Those who mindfully include each of those three components into their practice can more easily regulate heart-rate variability (HRV). When your heart rate is lower, that means you are in your parasympathetic nervous system and you can more easily regulate your stress.

Breath & Body Connection

When you have awareness of your breath, you can use your breath to lower blood pressure and dive into the parasympathetic nervous system to find deep relaxation and easy rest. In yoga we believe the breath and body are your best teachers – wise and can provide you with all your answers.

Immune support

Yoga helps lower cortisol levels (stress hormones) in your body and calms the nervous system. When cortisol levels are low, that gives the body time and energy to heal, repair and replenish more quickly -allowing your immune system to be stronger!

Flexibility & Strength

Practicing daily in some basic asanas like downward dog, sun salutations and warrior poses will increase your flexibility in no time. When you breathe and move with the correct posture and take your time moving through the poses, strengthening and conditioning your body will begin to happen. Your core and full body strength will improve over time.

Mindfulness & Self awareness

When you slow down, you become more aware of yourself. More aware of how you feel, what sensations are present and what the body might be communicating to you.

Daily yoga builds a stronger mind-body-soul connection. This can help you notice your thoughts and emotions more easily and provide you with another outlet to manage the ego’s negative self talk

Improved sleep

Studies have shown that practicing daily yoga can reduce insomnia.

When experiencing insomnia, practice relaxing asanas or postures, such as forward fold (uttanasana) or lying on your back with your feet up the wall.

Yoga as a direct embrace and embodiment of life

For those of you who have a regular practice then you know the magic of Yoga. Each individual resonates with a form/lineage/type of yoga. That yoga practice becomes an expression of you. A place for peace. A place for connection and love. A oneness and union with yourself and God. Your breath as your teacher and guide to the divine.

Are you starting to feel a sense of transformation? Has your life started to change before your eyes? This is the magic of a daily yoga practice.

Once you embody it as a lifestyle and the wisdom associated with the practice moves through you, it becomes the embodiment of life. So much more than just another tool to help you get into shape.

Some describe it as a sense of awakening – fostering a deeper connection with self.

If you feel like you don’t have time for this – then this is for YOU..!
