The Benefits of Sound Healing

Sound Baths have been a growing trend and topic the last few years, and for good reason. Sound healing is an ancient practice that uses the power of frequency and vibration to help clear and align the chakras, and bring peace to the physical and energetic body.

Not only is this a beautiful musical experience, but it’s also filled with mental and physical benefits that serve your personal and spiritual growth. The benefits of sound healing allow you to deepen your connection to self and source.

I can tell you first hand that sound and music have literally changed my life in every way. Since being introduced to the crystal singing bowls in 2012, my world is more musically infused and full of constant growth than ever before! The vibrations and frequencies are powerful and always give you what you NEED, not what you think you need.

So what is sound healing?

In simple terms, sound healing is mediation in the form of music and vibration.

Typical instruments used in the sound bath are: crystal singing bowls, Tibetan singing bowls, koshi chimes, native hand drums, tingshas, gongs, flutes, and tuning forks. Sometimes shruti boxes, rain sticks and really any other instrument can be used.

Some sound healers like myself also use voice work, mantra and toning to anchor in energy and intention to serve the people receiving the sound.

The power of the crystal singing bowls and gongs are so potent, they completely fill a room! It sounds like they are coming toward you from all angles, like you’re being bathed in sound – hence the term, sound bath.

Sound and music are powerful healing tools and can be an amazing addition to any daily self love practice. Sound healing can be a great way to start or end your day, to reset, and get back to an energized vibe

How does it work?

Everything around us is sound, vibration and light.
Your body, like all matter, responds and reacts to vibration. You are made up of 60%-70% water! The water within you actually moves when receiving the vibration of the singing bowls and frequencies.

When you think about it, of course powerful sound vibrations would cause a physical shift in your body’s energy, as it literally vibrates the water in your body. Think about the full moon and how it affects the tides. It’s all connected.

I actually play using multiple tunings and frequencies such as: 440hz, 432hz and 528hz. I find that when the body is surrounded by multiple frequencies, it has to adjust and calibrate more and this allows the body to fall into a deep state to receive, energize, release or rest.

What do you need to do to prepare?

Honestly, not much. Just know that if it’s your first experience, like anything new, your mind might try to get in the way and resist. Remember, this is normal, and all you need to do if you feel any anxiety, fear or resistance is to focus on your breath and listen to the sounds. Remember you are safe and nothing bad will happen.

“It’s easier to meditate with sound healing” is a common observation my clients and students have shared with me. Some people find it is easier to drop into a meditative state whilst listening to the sounds and resting, versus trying to follow and stay focused on a guided meditation.

Sound healing is like a gateway to other meditation techniques. It’s a great entry lane into meditation if seated meditation or guided meditations are challenging for you.

How to use sound healing to deepen your practice?

Like everything new, it takes time to get used to a new practice and drop in. So, do it as much as you’re called to it. And every time you practice, focus on taking deep breaths and listening to the sounds.

As you get comfortable there, begin to bring awareness to your third eye point (the point in between your eyebrows) or your pituitary gland. As you listen and breathe, imagine breathing in and out from your third eye to stimulate it and begin to activate it.

Benefits of Sound Healing

The harmonic vibrations and sounds used (singing bowls, gongs, etc), deepen the meditative state, tapping into your brain’s rest and restoration waves. This state can be really beneficial for cleansing and healing, giving the body and mind permission to RELEASE built up tensions.

When incorporated into a daily practice, this can have a profound effect on your day to day life – allowing you to let go of the things you tend to hold onto, creating space for what aligns with our souls. The more you let go of, the more open you are to receive.
